What is the difference between Pilates Based Rehab with a physical therapist and Pilates?
Physical therapists treat injured patients with the goal of restoring function and performance. Pilates instructors help general conditioning clients optimize their performance, achieve their fitness goals, and stay healthy. While both a Pilates instructor and a Physical Therapist certified in Pilates will utilize the exercises and principles developed by Joseph Pilates, a physical therapist is able to modify and select the appropriate exercises for a person’s particular pathology based upon their evaluation. A therapist can also provide manual treatment work to help relieve pain and restore function.
How do I know if I should see a Physical Therapist or a Pilates Instructor?
If you are in acute pain or chronic pain that has persisted beyond a reasonable amount of time for recovery, if you have symptoms that radiate down your legs or arms, if you have had a recent surgery, or if you just aren’t sure, you should see a physical therapist that can perform an evaluation of your problem. They will then be able to formulate a treatment plan which may include physical therapy, a clearance to move on to Pilates, or a referral to another provider.
